Getting an early jump on the weekend since I'll be out of town the rest of the week.
Thursday, there is a big jam band show at Maymont. Umphrey's McGee (who put on a great show at The National earlier this year) and STS9 will be down there, in a beautiful setting for getting your groove on. Tix are $30 in advance, $35 at the gate and it's all General Admission. Kids under 10 are free. Gates will open at 5 and the music will start at 5:30. Each band will play one extended set. If you really want perfect sound, you can rent audiophile headphones for the show and get the pristine monitor mix pumped right into your head. The offer is only for up to 20 fans and costs $50 but includes downloads of the full show from both bands. If you are interested, go HERE. Here's Umphrey's live in Chicago 9 days ago:
Need something to do after the Umphrey's/STS9 show? Well jam band fans, there are two choices for you on Thursday night. Electronica band, The Silo Effect, will be headlining an Umphrey's/STS9 afterparty at The Camel. Doors will open at 9 and it's FREE to get in. If you like your jamming more blues/classic rock based, head to Cary St. Cafe for Trongone Band. That'll start around 10 and it's also FREE to get in. Trongone Band is promising special guests sitting in throughout the night.
If you are at home this weekend, Evntlive will be webcasting the North Coast Music Festival live from Chicago. You can watch that HERE. Show starts at 5 ET on Friday, 2:30 ET on Saturday and Sunday. Bands to be shown include Disco Biscuits, Passion Pit, Conspirator, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Wu-Tang Clan, Lotus, and many others.
Here in Richmond, Friday night finds the jazzy Jeff Sipe Trio at the Capital Ale House. The show starts at 10 PM with doors opening at 9. Tix are $7 in advance, $10 day of show. Jeff has played drums with Steve Vai, Bruce Hampton & The Aquarium Rescue Unit, Leftover Salmon, and many others. The Trio was recently added to the lineup at Lockn' Festival in Arrington VA where they will be doing a midnight set and probably jamming with everyone including what many are expecting as a reunion of the original Aquarium Rescue Unit with Col. Bruce Hampton, Oteil Burbridge and Jimmy Herring. Here's the Jeff Sipe Trio at the ATL Drum Collective on 8/17/13:
More jamming from DJ Williams Projekt over at The Camel on Friday night. This one should be pretty funky as it's the DJWP 70's party and The Southern Belles will also be on the bill. Dress up in your best 70's attire and you could win cash prizes and other free giveaways. No cover charge is listed but if there is one, it should be minimal, in the $7 - $10 range. Here's the Projekt doing the Curtis Mayfield classic "Move On Up", which, being a '70s tune, you'll probably hear on Friday night.
That'll do it. Have a great Labor Day weekend! Expect another early one next week as I will be off to the Lockn' Festival on Thursday and getting more excited every day.

Supporting music in Richmond since 2000 - "Hello, my love, I heard a kiss from you / Red magic satin playing near, too / All through the morning rain I gaze, the sun doesn't shine / Rainbows and waterfalls run through my mind / In the garden, I see, west purple shower bells and tea / Orange birds and river cousins dressed in green / Pretty music, I hear, so happy and loud / Blue flowers echo from a cherry cloud" - The Brothers Johnson, “Strawberry Letter 23”
