Lots to do this weekend starting with Thursday night's Groovin' in the Garden at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens with hometown boys Carbon Leaf. Gates open at 5:30, music will start around 6 with a guest TBA. Tix are all General Admission, $15 in advance, $20 at the gate. Children 10 and under are free. Make sure to get there early to see David Bazan, front man for Pedro the Lion and a man Paste Magazine called one of the "100 Best Living Songwriters". On Friday night, blues great Delbert McClinton will scheduled to be at Powhatan Courthouse. Not because he is in trouble but because he'll be performing as part of the Powhatan Live concert series. However, according to Delbert's web site, the show has been postponed until August 4th due to weather concerns.
Here's an indoor show for Friday night so you won't have to worry about the weather. Black Girls will be at The Camel. Doors open at 9, show starts at 10 with opener Dr. Millionaire (Isaiah & Hovey). It's $6 to get in. Here's Black Girls performing "Low" at Strange Matter in March 2011:
If you want a show to take the kids too, go to Ashland Coffee & Tea Saturday morning at 11 AM to see folk singer Ellis Paul do a special kids show. Tix are $5 for kids, $7 for adults. Here is what the Ashland Coffee & Tea site said about the show: "Ashland Coffee & Tea is proud to present an afternoon Children’s Show with acclaimed Folk singer, Ellis Paul. The Dragonfly Races is Ellis’ 14th album marks his debut into the family/children’s genre. Written in true to form Ellis Paul style of compelling and witty story telling; each song will bring both parents and children into a picture that Ellis paints with each lyric. To make the CD even more special, Ellis has married his drawing and painting skills with his music; all the artwork is done by Ellis. Out at Innsbrook on Saturday you'll find the Flavor Beer, Wine & Food Fest. It'll run from noon to 6 and there will be, um, mostly beer, wine and food. It's $10 for a walk around ticket, $25 for a sampling package (30 beer sampling tickets), and $35 for a VIP ticket which gets you extra stuff.
On Saturday down at Brown's Island, the Mothership will land at the 8th Annual Stone Soul Picnic. The Mothership, of course, referring to George Clinton & P-Funk. There will be a bunch of other R&B acts too including Boyz II Men, Ruben Studdard and others. It'll run from noon to 8:30 and it's $30 to get in. Here's some classic P-funk performing "Flash Light" in Houston in '78:
Saturday night, The Original Wailers will spark up at The National. Doors open at 7, show starts at 8 with opener Antero. Tix are $12.50 in advance, $15 at the door. Here's Bob Marley and the Wailers live in Santa Barbara in '79, full show!
On Sunday on the 100 - 300 blocks of W Broad St, the Broad Appetit festival takes place with a whole bunch of great food. It'll run from 11 AM to 6 PM. 60 of Richmond's best chefs create $3 mini-dishes for you to savor. There will be some bands playing but really you go for the food.
On Sunday night at the Carpenter Theatre, SPARC will present Live Art which will feature some of Virginia's finest musicians including Robbin Thompson, Steve Bassett, Susan Greenbaum and others performing with student performers. Tickets start at $35 and proceeds benefit SPARC (School of the Performing Arts in the Richmond Community).
DJ Williams Projekt will celebrate their 9th Anniversary at The Camel on Sunday night. Doors open at 8, show starts at 9, tix are $7. There will be a ton of special guests and friend of DWP.
Finally, on Tuesday night at Innsbrook, the boys with the beards come to town. ZZ Top bring their Gang of Outlaws tour to town. Tix are $21.50 in advance, $25 at the gate, children 10 and under are free. Gates open at 6 and openers are 3 Doors Down and Gretchen Wilson. Before you go to the show that night, be sure to check out Texicali, a four track digital collection from ZZ Top that offers the first new studio recordings from “That Little Ol’ Band From Texas” in nine years. The four new songs, available from iTunes and all digital retail outlets, offer a preview of the group’s full-length album, as yet untitled, that will be released on American Recordings late this summer or early fall. RIP Doc Waston & Ween, Late Night Pick: Kendrick Lamar, Tennis, Kimbra, Gary Clark Jr.
Americana guitar master Doc Watson passed away yesterday at the age of 89. HERE is the full obit.
Also, the weird and eclectic (in a delightful way) rock band, Ween, are apparently done. Click HERE for the story. Here's one of my favorite Ween songs, "Mutilated Lips" from their psychedelic album, "The Mollusk". I always liked this version from the short-lived MTV show "Oddsville" because of the random assortment of dancers:

Late Night Pick: Schoolboy Q, Cults, Ed Sheerhan
It looks like all the late night shows are in repeats this week. I guess they all take a week off for the Memorial Day holiday. But there is a full show of music on the Last Call with Carson Daly repeat featuring rapper Schoolboy Q, alt-pop duo Cults, Americana artists Wheeler Brothers, and pop/folk/hip-hop artist Ed Sheeran. Last Call is on NBC at 1:35 AM.

Late Night Pick of the Night: Lambchop
Tonight, catch alt-country group, Lambchop, on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on NBC at 12:35 AM. Bill Hader and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar will also be on the show. Lambchop dedicated their latest album, "Mr M.", to the late great singer-songwriter Vic Chesnutt (shouldn't it have been called "Mr. C"?) and the album is getting great reviews.

Friday Cheers on Brown's Island does their now annual Memorial Day weekend RVA Music Night. It'll start at 6, run until 9:30 and it's only $5 to get in. The bands are Three Sheets to the Wind, The Trillion and Photosynthesizers. Here's the dirt on each band, courtesy of Venture Richmond:
"Three Sheets to the Wind, America's No. 1 Tribute to Yacht Rock, covers smooth radio hits from 1976 to 1984. Underestimate their yachting-themed stage attire at your own risk. One thing is for certain — their tongue-firmly-planted-in-cheek devotion to the AM gold era is no joke. The music is given a faithful and thorough interpretation, and Richmond audiences have been packing venues all over the city to hear the band's send-ups of so-terrible-they're-incredibly-cool artists like Toto, Hall & Oates, Michael McDonald, and Steely Dan. Are they serious? Are they kidding? Who cares? We're all singing along. (They also won "Best Richmond Cover Band" in the 2012 Style Weekly Best of Richmond poll.)
Later on Friday night, Grateful Dead cover band King Solomon's Marbles will be at Cary St. Cafe. Show starts at 10 and it's $7 to get in.

It'll run from 11 AM to 6:30 PM and feature DJ Williams Projekt, The Big Payback, Scott Frock and the Killin, Stony Brook Moonshine and others. It'll be FREE too. Somewhat music related and pretty cool is the Rocketts Red Glare festival at Rockett's Landing on Sunday night. Colin Healy will play at 5:30 and then Kings of Swing at 6:30. The Nina & Pinta, replicas of Columbus' ships will be on view and open for touring. Wine, craft beer and desserts will be on sale. Fireworks at 9.

Yonder Mountain String Band, St. Vincent, Late Night Pick: Stone Gossard and Shawn Smith
Tonight, newgrass group Yonder Mountain String Band will wander to Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden for a show. This is part of the Groovin' in the Garden series. Gate opens at 5:30, show starts at 6. Children under 10 are free. Adults have to pay some price, probably around $20 but oddly since they removed the show from the "purchase tickets" area on the Groovin' web site, I can't tell you how much. Both electronica musician Flying Lotus and Brit rockers Band of Skulls will be on Last Call with Carson Daly tonight at 1:35 AM on NBC.

Late Night Pick of the Night: The Afghan Whigs
Acclaimed 90's rock band, The Afghan Whigs, are back together and they'll be on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon tonight at 12:35 AM on NBC. The Whigs will be hitting up festivals in Europe and America (Lollapalooza & Austin City Limits) but don't have any other dates in the US lined up so this may be one of the few chances to see them.
