Late Night Pick: Van Halen

Van Halen will be on Jimmy Kimmel Live tonight (ABC, 11:35 PM). They are promoting a new live album so no new material means you'll hear some classic Van Halen. They'll be performing on Hollywood Boulevard and the show will be shown over two nights, tonight and tomorrow night. And believe it or not this is the band's first US TV performance with David Lee Roth. Maybe they'll play this one from "1984":

Americana/pop/rock/adult alternative/indie/progressive country band, The Mavericks, are on Conan tonight (TBS, 11 PM). The Mavericks are back in the States after a tour of Europe and are hitting Conan after playing in Texas and the SW. Here's their video for "Here Comes My Baby" from 1999:

Friday night, rock n' roller Willie Nile will be at the new venue, The Tin Pan. Show starts at 8 PM (no opener listed) and tickets are $25. Willie is celebrating the 35th anniversary of his self-titled debut album this year. Willie will be solo at The Tin Pan but here's Willie and his band playing in Asbury Park NJ in January with a friend joining them:



Jeff Sipe Trio is at Capital Ale House Friday night. Doors open at 8, show starts at 9. It's $8 in advance, $10 at the door. The last time I saw Jeff Sipe Trio was at about 3:30 AM at the Triangle Stage at the first Lockn' Festival. Jeff Sipe Trio plays jazzy jam rock. Which is appropriate because Jeff has played drums with Bela Fleck, Phil Lesh, Jimmy Herring Band, Trey Anastasio Band, Derek Trucks and Col. Bruce Hampton & The Aquarium Rescue Unit. By the way, Col. Bruce has joined the Aquarium Rescue Unit again and they'll be playing at The National on August 13. Progressive jazz group The Bad Plus will do two shows at Capital Ale House on Saturday. For the early set, doors open at 6:15 and the show starts at 7, For the late set, doors open at 8:45 and the show starts at 9:30. For each show, Premium admission is $40 (Premium seats are in the first three rows of tables. Includes early entrance and the option of upgrading to dinner and a drink prior to the show for $25.) and GA is $35. Here's The Bad Plus in London last year:

The Weight (The Band tribute band, wait, that sounds redundant) will be at Pocahontas State Park to kick off this year's Pocahontas Live concert series. Well, it was supposed to at Pocahontas State, but with temps going down to 21 degrees on Saturday night, they made the wise decision to move the show to the Beacon Theatre in Hopewell. GA is $12.50 in advance, $15 at the door; Reserved is $25 in advance, $30 at the door. If you bought tickets for the show at the park, they'll be honored at the theatre. Metal band Torche will be at Strange Matter Saturday night. Doors open at 8 and it's $12 to get in. Wrong, Hivelords and Suppression will open. If jamtronica is more your thang, check out EOTO at The National Saturday night. Tix are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Those under 21 will pay an extra $3 at the door. Alt-country band, American Aquarium, is at The Broadberry Saturday night. Doors open at 8, Dalton Dash opens the show. Tix are $12 in advance, $15 at the door. If you think it's all fun and games when a band goes to SXSW, American Aquarium did 12 shows in 3 days. I'm guessing this show was on their way down to SXSW, this is "Man I'm Supposed to Be" at Cain's Ballroom:



Sunday is the show I'm going to and really looking forward to. The War on Drugs will be at The National Sunday night. Doors open at 7, show starts at 8 with opener Hop Along. Tix are $23 in advance, $26.50 at the door. If you are buying in advance, head to The National box office to buy them. Ticketmaster added 50% to the price of the ticket in various fees and service charges. And they wonder why people hate them. But back to the band. I've been listening to their album "Lost in the Dream" near constantly for the last three months. It's swirling, jangly psychedelia reminds me at times of Pink Floyd, Wilco, Neil Young, and The Feelies but it's a sound that's their own. Here they are playing "Red Eyes" in Newcastle, England last month:



Quirky, art rockers Tune-Yards are at The National on Monday. I was supposed to go to this show but sometimes it's hard to overcome mistrust caused by people in someone's past. Tix are $21 in advance, $24 day of show. Doors open at 7, show starts at 8. Son Lux and Avers open the show. Get there early to see Avers. This is their first hometown show after their triumph at SXSW, which has them getting major national buzz. Tune-Yards new video just came out today (3/24). Here it is.



You can check out three great local bands on Tuesday night at a live event at Sound of Music Recording Studios that will be recorded for posterity. Late Night Pick: Zac Brown Band

Country rock band, Zac Brown Band, are on Jimmy Kimmel Live tonight (11:35 PM, ABC). ZBB has a new album, "Jekyll & Hyde", coming out on 4/28. ZBB is now big enough that they'll be playing baseball stadiums this summer along with the big sheds including VA Beach Amphitheater. Here's ZBB's big hit from 2008, "Chicken Fried":

Weekend Picks: Church Hill Irish Fest, Bring The Spring, Diamond Center, Young Widows, Ledisi, Trongone Band, Shack Band, Fear of Music

Post-punk noise rockers Young Widows headline a show at Strange Matter on Thursday night. It's $12 to get in, doors open at 8 and Shannon Wright and The Austerity Program start the show. You might dig Young Widows if you like Grinderman, The Jesus Lizard, or Melvins. Here's Young Widows latest video, "King Sol":

There's a Friday happy hour at Hardywood that will feature The Diamond Center's last show as an RVA band. They are off to Austin TX, a bright blue spot in red state. home of Austin City Limits, the City of the Violet Crown. I'm sure they'll be back to visit but who knows when so check them out now. Anyway you look at it, their unique brand of garage psychedelia and support of the local music and arts scene will be missed. The tasting room opens at 4 and Slideways Mobile Bistro food truck will be there to provide the vittles (see, I'm talking like a Texan to get Diamond Center ready for their move). Music starts at 5:30 with Father Sunflower and the Golden Rays (experimental psych folk). It will continue with Lobo Marino's tribal earth trance folk. Then, The Diamond Center to close the show and their time in Richmond with everything ending around 9. Yippie-ki-ay, motherf**kers. Here's Diamond Center at Hardywood on March 7. There's a lot of background noise at the start but the band soon drowns them out with swirling walls of sound:



There's Americana influenced alt-rock with The Shack Band at Broadberry on Friday night. Doors open at 8 and Common Wealth opens. Tix are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. The Shack Band will be at Rooster Fest 7, a cool little festival in Martinsville VA May 21-24 that will feature Lake Street Dive, Steep Canyon Rangers, Southern Culture on the Skids, Yarn and more. One of Richmond's favorite festivals, the 30th Annual Church Hill Irish Festival takes place this weekend (10 AM - 7 PM Saturday, 10 AM - 6 PM Sunday) on 25th Street at Broad. A $5 donation at the gate benefits local charities. Two stages of live music, food, beer, Irish dancing, a great kids' area and lots of fun.

Bring The Spring! takes place at Sound of Music Recording Studio from noon to 4 Saturday. There will be a market featuring curated vintage and locally made handmade clothing, art, jewelry, records, books and more. Musical guests include Patrick Bates, Red Lewis & TheLetting Go and Ward Harrison. ZZQ will be on hand with meaty and vegetarian BBQ options. You'll also have a chance to support Girls Rock! Fear of Music, Richmond's premier Talking Heads tribute band, performed the best show I've seen them do at The Broadberry last month. They are back at The Broadberry on Saturday night. "Fresh Blood" is his second full-length album and is getting great reviews, just like his first. After the show tonight, he'll be off to SXSW along with every other musician in the known galaxy. Weekend Picks: St. Pat's Day Fests, Dar Williams, Mary Gauthier, Melvin Seals & JGB, Mekong Xpress & Get Fresh Horns, Jackass Flats

Five St. Patrick's Day Festivals on Saturday. As on Wednesday evening, the weather is looking iffy so be sure to check on their websites and/or Facebook pages on Saturday to make sure they are still on before you head out. Nothing like showing up in your green finery. looking like an overgrown leprechaun, only to find there is no one else there.

But first, let's talk about Friday night. The Camel has the soul/rock/funk of Mekong Xpress & the Get Fresh Horns. This band is made up of members of Modern Groove Syndicate, Bio Ritmo, Mathew E White's band, Particle, Former Champions, The Big Payback, DJ Williams Projekt, New Belgians and Beast Wellington. A RVA supergroup, if you will, and they are promising lots of special guests at the show. It's $7 to get in, doors open at 8, the show will start at 9:30 with Blaqtronic and DJ Phil Dice will be spinning before and between sets. And be sure to congratulate trumpet player Bob on the birth of his daughter. Here's Mekong Xpress playing at the place that gave them their name, Mekong, in August:

It's bluegrass & Americana over at Broadberry on Friday night. Jackass Flats headlines with openers Seth Stainback and Roosterfoot, and Matt Jones and the Bobs. Doors open at 8, it's $8 in advance, $10 at the door. Here's Jackass Flats live at Camp Barefoot in August:



Let the St. Pat's Day fests begin. Saturday at Sine' it's their 16th Annual St. Pat's Day Street Party and it's FREE. The event starts at 10:30 AM. Bands include Broke by Monday (noon - 2), Teaze Band  (3 - 5), Type Cast (6 - 8), Doc Grin Band (9 - midnight).

At Rosie Connolly's Pub in Shockoe Bottom Saturday, their Block Party goes from 11 AM  - 6 PM and is FREE. There will be music by Sutor Brothers, Patchwork, Scalaheen, Pipes & Drums from the Metro Richmond Emerald Society and Irish Dancing from the Southern Academy of Irish Dance.

Concurrently in the Bottom, it's Shockoe Fest, which goes from 11 AM - 5 PM and features music from Bucket, Patchwork, Jimmy Catlett Group, Roper & Furley, RPG, Sutor Brothers, Pipes & Drums from the Metro Richmond Emerald Society, Hearts of Ireland, and Irish Dancing from the Southern Academy of Irish Dance.

Shamrock the Block takes over The Boulevard Saturday from 11 AM to 5 PM and is FREE. The bands there are Dirty Bangs (11 - noon), These Wild Plains (12:15 - 1:15), Jackson Ward (1:30 - 2:30), The Kairos Effect (2:45 - 3:45), Tigerman Woah (4 - 5). This one also has a Kids Area for the wee ones, but they warn to get there early because the lines can get long.

St. Paddy's Palooza is out at Innsbrook Pavilion on Sunday (this was changed from Saturday) and proceeds go to St. Baldrick's Foundation to help kids with cancer. It will run from 11 AM to 5 PM. This one is definitely the most family oriented and music will be provided by Cary St. Ramblers, Flat Elvis, members of Honky Tonk Heroes, and much Irish dancing.

If you are looking for a quick breakdown:

• Family oriented: St. Paddy's Palooza
• Biggest: Shamrock the Block
• Most traditional: Shockoe Fest/Rosie Connolly's Pub
• Close proximity: Shockoe Fest/Rosie Connolly's Pub/Sine (all within a few blocks)
• Best Bands: Your guess is as good as mine. I don't recognize any of the bands. Expect lots of cover bands if they aren't playing Celtic music.

If you party too much at one of those St. Paddy's Day fests and want to come down with blues, brunch and the hair o' the dog, head to The Camel on Sunday for Blues Brunch with The Bush League. Brunch begins at 11 AM, the band plays from 2 PM to 4 PM and it's FREE to get in. It is also the birthday of both of their guitarists. Here they are in February at the 2015 International Blues Festival in Memphis:

Monday night at The National, it's Melvin Seals and JGB (Jerry Garcia Band). Doors open at 7, show starts at 8 and there is no opener listed. Tix are $20 in advance, $23 at the door. Melvin played in the original Jerry Garcia Band with the original Jerry Garcia Band and now he carries on the JGB tradition. On St. Patrick's Day itself on Tuesday, FW Sullivan's has their Sixth Annual St. Paddy's Day Celebration. They'll party inside the bar and also close down Stafford Avenue outside the bar for their Street Stage with music from local Richmond bands, which had not been announced as of 3/11. Sully's opens at 11:30 AM and the street festival starts at 4 PM. It's FREE but it is 21 and over only.

Punk band Perfect Pussy will be at Strange Matter Tuesday night. Doors open at 9 PM and it's $10 to get in. The Nervous Ticks and Men's Room will open. Here's their video for "I":



Folk singer/songwriter Dar Williams will lead a discussion and also play some tunes at a talk called Conflict & Protest at the Jepson Leadership Forum at University of Richmond, Camp Concert Hall, Booker Hall of Music on Wednesday at 7. Tickets for this event are FREE and can be reserved by calling the Modlin Center Box Office at (804) 289-8980 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. weekdays. She will discuss how artists have used music to facilitate socio-politico transitions and resolve conflicts, and will share samples from her beautifully crafted portfolio of songs of protest, power, and tolerance. Wednesday night at Ashland Coffee & Tea, it's an evening with singer/songwriter Mary Gauthier. Show starts at 8, it's $17 in advance, $20 day of show. This Sunday, she'll be recording a Mountain Stage radio show (NPR) with the Drive-By Truckers, the Barr Brothers, Allison Moorer and Carlos Nunez in Morgantown, WV. Can't wait to hear that one! Late Night Pick: Will Butler

Will Butler, keyboardist of Arcade Fire, has released his first solo album (he's still in Arcade Fire, though) and he'll be on Late Show with David Letterman tonight at 11:35 PM (CBS). The solo album is called Policy and it just came out today. Will recently did a week with The Guardian web site/newspaper doing a song a day based on current events. Here's the final song he wrote called "By The Waters of Babylon" inspired by the ransacking of the museum in Mosul by ISIS. You can here the other four songs HERE.

It struck me as a began to write this that David Letterman only has two months left until retirement. Enjoy him while you can! On tonight's Late Show (CBS, 11:35 PM), you can also enjoy Alabama Shakes. Tickets went on sale last Friday for their show at Charlottesville Pavilion on June 9. Tickets are still available but I wouldn't sleep on it, because they've been selling out at other venues on this tour. Late Night Pick: Caribou; Big Jerry Garcia tribute show in MD announced

Electronic/pop/rock/alternative/indie/club/dance band Caribou will be on Last Call with Carson Daly tonight (NBC, 1:35 AM). Caribou is the stage name for Daniel Smith who does all the songs and recordings, though he fleshes things out with a band to perform live. Caribou did a DJ mix for dublab.com a couple days ago and you can download/listen to it HERE. From Caribou's 2011 album, "Andorra", this is "She's the One" (not the Bruce tune):



A big Jerry Garcia tribute show was just announced for Merriweather Post Pavilion in MD on 5/14. The show will include the surviving members of the Grateful Dead, listed seperately, at least for now. Also on the bill: Bruce Hornsby, Buddy Miller, David Grisman, Greensky Bluegrass (who will play at Dominion Riverrock here in Richmond the day after this show), moe., Los Lobos, Railroad Earth, Widespread Panic, Disco Biscuits, Yonder Mountain String Band, Trampled By Turtles, Jimmy Cliff, Jorman Kaukonen and more. Tickets are going on sale Monday at 10 AM. Can't find the ticket prices yet, but I doubt it will be cheap. At least a portion of the proceeds are going to the Rex Foundation charity. Weekend Picks: Screaming Females, Lucero, Ryan Bingham, Particle, Cobalt Cranes, Kepone, Brown Sabbath, Diamond Center

Despite the wintry weather on Thursday, it feels like spring is on the way as the concert calendar is starting to busier. The bands are coming back out after hibernation, Friday Cheers has been announcing their shows and it is getting easier to imagine watching bands in shorts and t-shirts under the stars.

Thursday gets underway with RVA's own, DJ Williams Projekt, at The Answer Brewpub. They'll be tapping brews from Maine Beer Co. starting at 4. The band starts at 8 and it's FREE to get in. Here's DJWP when they played with Karl Denson at The Broadberry.

At The Broadberry on Thursday, it's the return of one of the original jamtronica groups, Particle. Doors open at 8, show starts at 9 with opener Greenhouse Lounge. It's $15 to get in. I caught Particle at the Canal Club when they were in town about a year ago on their first show here in Richmond in a long time. They can still bring the funk and they were really good. Particle keyboardist and leader Steve Molitz played with Phil Lesh & Friends for a while and recently played a Phil & Friends show at Phil's Terrapin Crossroads concert venue in CA. Here they are at the Catskill Chill festival in 2013.



Friday, The Southern Belles are at The Camel for their usual First Friday show. Doors open at 8, show starts at 9 with openers The Get Right Band. It's $7 in advance, $10 at the door. After this show, the Belles head out on a tour that starts in my old stomping grounds of Allentown, PA, and will also take them to KY, CO, MT, and KS. Spread the word, boys, spread the word! Country rock band Everwilde will be at Sine' Irish Pub Friday night. It was announced today that one of the founding members of the band, Shawn Drudge (drummer), and his cousin, Adam (guitar), left the band so you can see how the new guys are working out at their first show on Friday. Friday night at Strange Matter, it's a psychedelic grunge fest with Cobalt Cranes (from Los Angeles), The Diamond Center (RVA) and Manzara. Kyle & Brandi of Diamond Center will be relocating to Austin TX soon so this will be the last time they play Strange Matter as an RVA band. I'm sure they'll be back to play in the future when they'll be just another Austin band (albeit a great one), but they'll always be an RVA band to us. You will get another chance to see The Diamond Center on Saturday when they play at Hardywood Craft Brewery for the Black Vinyl Stout release to celebrate Plan 9 vinyl passion over the decades. Beers at tapped at 2. From 2 - 4:30 you can bring your favorite, weirdest, or rarest vinyl for special guest DJs from WRIR to spin. Bring your story about the record and tell it and you may win a gift certificate. At 4:45, Hotel X (world music/jazz) will perform. The Diamond Center will be on from 5:50 to 6:35. White Laces (dreamy, atmospheric indie-pop from Richmond) will be on from 6:35 - 7:40. Legendary Richmond punk rockers, Kepone, will close the show from 8 - 8:50. This is not a repeat. Natalie Prass will be on Last Call with Carson Daly again tonight (NBC, 1:35 AM). I"m guessing they'll show another song or two from her recent show in LA. Jonny Two Bags, the guitarist from Social Distortion who has a solo album out, will also be on the show.
