Weekend Picks: WRIR Monster Mashquerade, Anthony Hamilton, Milk Carton Kids, Trongone Band, Imaginary Sons, The Taters, Bush League, The Atkinsons, Life On Mars, Fear of Music

Boo! It's Halloween weekend, which now seems to mean lots of tribute bands and lots of band putting on "musical costumes" and playing a bunch of songs from another band. There's some original stuff happening too and we'll get to all of it, so let's begin. Enter if you dare!

If you're looking for something for happy hour on Friday, head to The Camel for Blues & Brews with The Bush League. It don't cost nothin' to get in and it goes from 5 - 8. You know, happy three hours. This will be Wynton's (the drummer ) birthday so be sure to buy him a drink and/or say Happy Birthday. Here's the band at Big Bugg's Island Blues Bash.



Over at Modlin Center for the Arts. folk duo The Milk Carton Kids take the stage. Tix range from $14 - $28, but for most of us will be $28. Show starts at 7:30 with special guest Vance Gilbert. The Milk Carton Kids "offer up a signature blend of flat-picking and tight harmony that earned them a 2015 Grammy® nomination in the Best American Roots Performance category and a 2013 nomination for Best Folk Album" (from the press blurb). The band was recently part of the Lampedusa Tour For Refugees to raise money to support educational programs for refugees around the world. They were joined by Robert Plant, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Patty Griffin, Buddy Miller and others. Not bad company to be in. Here they are at the show in Boulder performing Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here". Fantastic harmonies.

Psychedelic rockers Imaginary Sons are throwing a Halloween party at The Camel Friday night. The band says "This month's Halloween party show will be to raise public awareness about the mutant gator infestation and the threat of impending gatorization of our neighborhoods and families." Truly the greatest threat to our times. Tix are $6 advance, $8 day of show. My Darling Fury, Secret Nudist Friends, and Doctor Collins open. Here's Imaginary Sons in Blacksburg in 2015:



Talking Head tribute band Fear of Music are at Broadberry Friday. Doors at 8, show starts at 9, no opener is listed. There will be costume prizes so bring them on. Here's Talking Heads' "Road to Nowhere":

RVA Americana band The Atkinsons are at 7 Hills Seafood & Brewing Company Saturday evening (7 - 10 PM don't pay attention to the time on the poster, 7-10, really). Here's the band doing "Lyin' and Honesty" at The Tin Pan in February.

Speaking of the Tin Pan, The Taters  throw their Halloween Party there Saturday night starting at 8. There will be lots of fun songs from their Halloween album, "Don't Scream", and you can, of course, wear your costume. Here's "Haunted House" from their 2013 Halloween show:

WRIR's Monster Mashquerade at The Camel not only has three kick ass bands and a rockin' DJ, but your donation helps fuel RVA's independent radio station, WRIR. You get in with a $5-10 donation to WRIR. Wear your costumes as there will be prized for Best Mask and Best Costume. The doors open at 8:30. And as for music. You get Dazeases (who will also premiere her new music video), the sci-fi rock of League of Space Pirates and Pete Curry (electro/sega/synthwave/darkwave/punk/soul/surf/lo-fi/pop). At The Broadberry Saturday, The Trongone Band put on their musical costume and present RVA Woman: A Tribute to The Doors. There will be prizes for best costume. They'll do an original set (and you might hear some new songs from the album they are working on) and then a set of Doors music. Hope they play this one.



Smooth soul man Anthony Hamilton is at the Altria Theater Sunday with Lalah Hathaway and Eric Benet opening. The show starts at 7:30 and tix range from $27 - $87. Here's Anthony's latest video, Ever Seen Heaven:

On Halloween proper (Monday night) David Bowie tribute band Life on Mars will be at The Camel and the powerful, soulful and beautiful Sam Reed and her band will be Cosmic Blues and cover Janis Joplin. Weekend Picks: Standing Rock benefit, George Thorogood, Little River Band, Greensky Bluegrass, Felice Brothers, The Congress, Perpetual Groove, Trongone Band

This weekend starts with some fun for something serious. On Thursday, there is a fundraiser for the #NoDAPL movement to show support for the movement at Standing Rock which is peacefully demonstrating to stop the construction of a massive oil pipeline. This will be a fundraiser for the Sacred Stone Camp and collecting supplies that are listed as needs on the website. They are currently preparing for winter so provisions and warm weather gear is needed. The event will be held at the Hofenheimer Bldg from 6 PM - 11 PM. It's free to get in but the donation bucket will be passed around all night so please be generous. There will also be a raffle. And there will be bands. Here's the lineup:

The Congress will be at The Broadberry Thursday night to celebrate the release of their new album, "The Game". Doors open at 8, show starts at 9 with Major & the Monbacks opening. Tix are $12 advance, $15 day of show. After this show, The Congress head to DC, Brooklyn, then out west and out of the country to conquer the world. This is "Farewell" from that upcoming album. Love the harmonies!



70's smooth rock band Little River Band will be kicking off The State Fair of Virginia on Friday. The show starts at 7 PM and is included with your admission to the fair. So load up on fried oreos, twinkies, turkey legs, pork bar-b-q and candy apples, then sit back and enjoy LRB's bevy of mellow hits. When I saw they were playing, "Lonesome Loser" immediately got stuck in my head and I walked around all day singing it. Now it's time for you to get it stuck in your head. You know you want to. Saturday, yours truly will be doing the 80's music show, Songs from the Big Hair, on WRIR-FM in Richmond from 3 - 5 PM. It'll be an 80's dance party as I'll be whipping out my 12".....singles. Yes, it was the age of short shorts on guys and big hair on girls. Tune in at 97.3 FM in the Richmond area or at wrir.org/listen.



It will be a dance party of a different kind at The National Saturday night when jam band Perpetual Groove take the stage. Tix are $19.50 advance, $23 day of show. The Trongone Band is at The Broadberry Saturday night. Tix are $12 advance, $15 day of show. Doors open at 9 and the show starts at 9 with opener Maradeen out of Nashville. The Trongones will have some new tunes, special guests and surprises for the show. It'll be a grand ol' time! Guitarist Andrew Trongone recently jammed with The Ron Holloway Band and Warren Haynes. Blues man George Thorogood and the Destroyers are at Pocahontas State Park on Sunday evening. Gates open at 5:30 and the show opens with One Way Ryde. Tix are $25 for GA, $37 for Gold Circle. Growing up in the Philly area, George was our hometown boy and I saw him many times back in the day in venues big and small. His version of "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" from the closing night of the Bijou Theater in Philly in the late 70's ('79?) that was broadcast live on WMMR is still one of the greatest version of that songs ever and I still listen to that cassette and love it. It will be a sad day when that tape finally breaks. He's always a fun time and has a great rapport with the audience. Bring your drinkin' shoes because I think every one of his songs mentions alcohol in some way. Here's George doing the acoustic blues at radio station KOKZ in Iowa a few days ago playing some tunes and also a good interview about his influences and start.



Americana band The Felice Brothers are at The Camel Wednesday night (9/28). Tix are $15. Doors open at 7, show starts at 8 with opener Aaron Lee Tasjan. Here's The Felice Brothers performing live in June:



Newgrass band Greensky Bluegrass is at The National Wednesday. They take the traditional bluegrass instrumentation but put a new spin on it venturing into jam band, jazz, blues, rock and country. Definitely not your grandaddy's bluegrass. Tix are $18 advance, $23 day of show. Doors open at 7, show starts at 8. No opener is listed. You can check out a live stream of their new album, "Shouted, Written Down & Quoted" here on Pandora Premieres. Here they are playing "Burn Them" in an gorgeous setting near Telluride CO:



That'll do it. I hope to see you at the Standing Rock benefit on Thursday and the Trongone Band show on Saturday. This song popped up on my iPod today and it's still one of my all-time favorite Prince songs. It breaks my heart to think I'll never get to see him play live again.

Weekend Picks: Dwight Yoakam, Blues Traveler, Richmond Roots Fest, DJ Williams Farewell Show, No BS! Brass Band, Imaginary Sons

I'll be rockin' at Lockn' this weekend, but there is some good stuff in town too. FYI, follow WRIR's Twitter feed this weekend, especially on Friday. I'll be tweeting from Lockn'.

If you can't make the jam band heaven that is Lockn', you can get your jam band fix with Blues Traveler Wednesday at Innsbrook. The Wallflowers and Howie Day will open the show. Gates open at 5, music begins around 6. Tix range from $20 - $99. This show will be Blues Traveler harmonica player and lead singer John Popper's first show back after having surgery for collapsed disks in his neck. He says he is now "2 inches taller and lost 10 lbs." His voice came back on the 18th so he should be good to go for the show. Give him a big welcome back when he takes the stage. Friday night, Imaginary Sons, Manzara, Shagwuf and The Wimps will rock The Camel. Doors at 8, show at 9, $8 advance, $10 day of show. Imaginary Sons will do a show at The Camel every fourth Friday of the month until the end of 2016. Here they are performing at last year's Gottafest in Milford VA:

The Richmond Roots Festival goes down at Hardywood on Saturday from 2 to 10 PM. The Roots Fest celebrates world and American roots music. It's FREE to get in. They'll have food trucks and yummy beer. Here's the lineup:

Monday night, it's your last chance to see DJ Williams, at least while he is a RVA resident, before he heads to LA to find fame and fortune. He does get to play Lockn' Fest on Saturday, opening up the day and me and my friends will be right up front. Monday he plays a slightly smaller venue at The Answer Brewpub. DJ will be jamming with a bunch of friends and it should be a fine send off. Hopefully, he won't forget us and will come back often. Show starts at 8 and it don't cost nothin' to get in. Friday Cheers starts the weekend on Brown's Island and the weather should be gorgeous. Unlike last Friday when I got drenched. I usually bring my rain jacket if there is even the slightest chance of rain. Last week, the forecast at 5:30 looked like the rain had passed so I didn't bring the jacket or a hat. Of course, it poured and I looked like a drowned rat. Went into Penny Lane to warm up with some fish & chips and stood at the bar eating while I dripped all over their floor.

This week at Friday Cheers, it's Philly boy Kurt Vile with his band The Violators. They are stopping here on their way to play Bonnaroo the next day. And the latest artist out of RVA to get much national attention, Lucy Dacus, opens the show at 6:30. Kurt does a version of the Grateful Dead's "Box of Rain" with The Violators and J. Mascis on the new album, "Day of the Dead", which benefits the Red Hot Organization. Here's some Kurt and some Lucy.

Folk artist Iris DeMent is at The Tin Pan Sunday night. Doors open at 5, show starts at 7, no opener. Tix are $35 advance, $40 at the door. Here's the press blurb for Iris:

You may have heard her many recordings with John Prine, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Merle Haggard, Ralph Stanley, and contemporary country singer Josh Turner. Iris DeMent has been featured many times on Garrison Keillor's radio show, A Prairie Home Companion and in the Cohen Brother's film True Grit. And to top it off, the Goo Goo Dolls song "Iris" was written about her.

Iris DeMent has been recording since 1992 with her first album, Infamous Angel. The songs "Our Town" and "Let the Mystery Be" brought Iris to national attention and were featured on the TV show Northern Exposure and re-recorded by the 10,000 Maniacs. In 1994 her second album My Life was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album.

After sixteen years of waiting, in 2012 Iris DeMent released a new album of original songs called Sing The Delta. Rolling Stone describes the new album: "…these artisanal songs of love and doubt wear their homeliness proudly; the effect is like finding a bountiful farm stand in the middle of nowhere."

Talking Heads tribute band Fear of Music plays for free in Forest Hill Park on Sunday evening. They'll play from 6 to 8 PM. Bring the kids. Here's Talking Heads on the UK's "Old Grey Whistle Test" in 1978:



Dismal Swamp Lords are at it again on Sunday night. They'll be part of the Bossy Lil' Thing Records showcase at Bandito's Sunday night. It'll start at 9 and it's FREE to get in. I believe the Swamp Lords will kick things off, followed by Suneater and then Imaginary Sons close the show. But don't hold me to that. Here's Imaginary Sons playing "Dorl Shorstl". Fitz and the Tantrums are at The National Tuesday night. Tix are $27.50 advance, $33 day of show. Doors open at 7, show starts at 8 with Finish Ticket opening. 'Twas the weekend before Christmas, and all through the town, lots of good bands were playing, all working on their sound. All their amp rigs were hung, on the stage with great care, in the hopes that a crowd, would soon be there.

Thursday night, Star Wars mania hits The Camel  with a Very Star Wars Xmas Party featuring The Milkstains, Imaginary Sons, Venus Guytrap, and The Wimps. It's a FREE show. Doors open at 8, music starts at 9. Star Wars your own self up and get ready to rock like you're in Mos Eisley Spaceport. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. And hopefully one of the bands will play this. Is Marty Balin singing into a light saber?

Bio Ritmo will play all the salsa Christmas songs they know Friday night at The Broadberry. Maybe they'll even play the Star Wars theme salsa style. Or not. It's $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Hamaganza celebrates it's 21st year at The Camel Friday night. Doors open at 8:30, show starts around 9. It's a benefit for Feedmore and CodeVA and you get in with either a $10 donation or a juicy ham. Diamond Heist (Neil Diamond tribute), League of Space Pirates (w/Noah Scanlin), Summerhaus (w/Melissa Chase) and Iggy Plop (Iggy Pop tribute) will provide the musical entertainment. There will also be the usual amount of chaotic, anarchic mayhem led by MC Dirtwoman and including jugglers, comedy, whistlers and other stuff. Here's the latest episode from League of Space Pirates. Or this could be a bootleg copy of Star Wars: Episode VII. You be the judge.



Saturday night, Carbon Leaf returns home for their now annual show at The National. Tix are $16 in advance, $20 at the door. Doors open at 7, show starts at 8 with opener Look Homeward. Friday night, rock n' roller Willie Nile will be at the new venue, The Tin Pan. Show starts at 8 PM (no opener listed) and tickets are $25. Willie is celebrating the 35th anniversary of his self-titled debut album this year. Willie will be solo at The Tin Pan but here's Willie and his band playing in Asbury Park NJ in January with a friend joining them:



Jeff Sipe Trio is at Capital Ale House Friday night. Doors open at 8, show starts at 9. It's $8 in advance, $10 at the door. The last time I saw Jeff Sipe Trio was at about 3:30 AM at the Triangle Stage at the first Lockn' Festival. Jeff Sipe Trio plays jazzy jam rock. Which is appropriate because Jeff has played drums with Bela Fleck, Phil Lesh, Jimmy Herring Band, Trey Anastasio Band, Derek Trucks and Col. Bruce Hampton & The Aquarium Rescue Unit. By the way, Col. Bruce has joined the Aquarium Rescue Unit again and they'll be playing at The National on August 13. Progressive jazz group The Bad Plus will do two shows at Capital Ale House on Saturday. For the early set, doors open at 6:15 and the show starts at 7, For the late set, doors open at 8:45 and the show starts at 9:30. For each show, Premium admission is $40 (Premium seats are in the first three rows of tables. The Weight (The Band tribute band, wait, that sounds redundant) will be at Pocahontas State Park to kick off this year's Pocahontas Live concert series. Well, it was supposed to at Pocahontas State, but with temps going down to 21 degrees on Saturday night, they made the wise decision to move the show to the Beacon Theatre in Hopewell. GA is $12.50 in advance, $15 at the door; Reserved is $25 in advance, $30 at the door. If you bought tickets for the show at the park, they'll be honored at the theatre. Metal band Torche will be at Strange Matter Saturday night. Doors open at 8 and it's $12 to get in. Wrong, Hivelords and Suppression will open. Alt-country band, American Aquarium, is at The Broadberry Saturday night. Doors open at 8, Dalton Dash opens the show. Tix are $12 in advance, $15 at the door. If you think it's all fun and games when a band goes to SXSW, American Aquarium did 12 shows in 3 days. I'm guessing this show was on their way down to SXSW, this is "Man I'm Supposed to Be" at Cain's Ballroom:



Sunday is the show I'm going to and really looking forward to. The War on Drugs will be at The National Sunday night. Doors open at 7, show starts at 8 with opener Hop Along. Tix are $23 in advance, $26.50 at the door. If you are buying in advance, head to The National box office to buy them. Ticketmaster added 50% to the price of the ticket in various fees and service charges. And they wonder why people hate them. But back to the band. I've been listening to their album "Lost in the Dream" near constantly for the last three months. It's swirling, jangly psychedelia reminds me at times of Pink Floyd, Wilco, Neil Young, and The Feelies but it's a sound that's their own. Quirky, art rockers Tune-Yards are at The National on Monday. I was supposed to go to this show but sometimes it's hard to overcome mistrust caused by people in someone's past. Tix are $21 in advance, $24 day of show. Doors open at 7, show starts at 8. Son Lux and Avers open the show. Get there early to see Avers. This is their first hometown show after their triumph at SXSW, which has them getting major national buzz. Tune-Yards new video just came out today (3/24). Here it is.



You can check out three great local bands on Tuesday night at a live event at Sound of Music Recording Studios that will be recorded for posterity.
