Supporting music in Richmond since 2000 - "Tough luck for the poor man, bootstraps won't pay the rent / Politicians pandering, begging for a vote / It's a quick rage-bait and switch so the rich keep getting rich / God knows it's good for business when we're at each other's throats" - Katie Pruitt, “Same Boat”

Late Night Pick: Angaleena Presley
Angaleena Presley, member of the country/Americana band, Pistol Annies, has got a solo album out (American Middle Class) and she'll be performing a song from it tonight on Late Show with David Letterman (CBS, 11:35 PM). This should be a pretty fun show, too, with Chelsea Handler and Key & Peele as guests. Here's Angaleena with the Pistol Annies. She's the brunette playing guitar:

Below, you can watch the full concert Robert did with his band, The Sensation Space Shifters, on 9/28 thanks to NPR. For a dude that doesn't want to be in Led Zeppelin anymore, he does a lot more Led Zep in his show than I thought he would. The show will only be available until 10/28 so don't wait on this:

Weekend Picks: Richmond Folk Fest, Jeff the Brotherhood, Diarrhea Planet, Devil Makes Three, No BS! Brass Band, Skydog, Papadosio, Village People
The weekend picks are coming a little early this week as I'll be grooving at Earth, Wind and Fire at Innsbrook tomorrow night and then possibly at the Jeff the Brotherhood/Diarrhea Planet show at Broadberry on Thursday.
And that's the show we'll start with: indie rock show Jeff the Brotherhood, Diarrhea Planet and The Milkstains at The Broadberry Thursday. Doors open at 8, show starts at 9, it's $15 to get in. JTB has a new covers EP out called "Dig the Classics" with covers of Pixies, My Bloody Valentine, Beck, Teenage Fanclub and more. They may even do a Rush cover at the show. Here's a three song live sampler from JTB in England:
And here's a solid 14 minutes from Diarrhea Planet earlier this month in FL:
Prog psychedlic rock band Papadosio are at The National on Thursday night. Tix are $17 advance, $20 at the door, doors open at 8, show starts at 9. Twiddle opens. Here's Papadosio's "Dream Estate":
If you are at home this weekend, you can watch the Austin City Limits fest live HERE. It starts at 3:15 PM ET Friday, 3 PM ET Saturday and 4 PM ET Friday. Two channels of live streams with artists like Beck, Jimmy Cliff, St. Vincent, Belle & Sebastian, Trombone Shorty, Head & The Heart, Interpol, Avett Brothers, Tune-Yards, Broken Bells, Fitz & The Tantrums, Gaslight Anthem, Jenny Lewis, Spoon, Lorde, Chromeo and more. Even when the live music is done, they'll be looping replays so you can tune in anytime after 3:15 PM ET Friday and catch something.
The big news here at home this weekend is the Richmond Folk Festival, three days of world music right here in your backyard. It's FREE all weekend (but please donate to the Bucket Brigade) and it's one of the biggest folk festivals in the country. And this isn't just Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger folk, though there will be a little of that. This festival is focused on the folk music and traditions of America and the world, the music and dance that bubbles up from the streets and the country. There will be everything from bluegrass to break dancing, Mayan sun dancing (at the top of an 80 foot pole!) to Tibetan opera, Indian slide guitar to Mexican mariachi, blues, gospel, and more. You can walk around a world of music in the area of Brown's Island and Tredegar Iron Works. Don't miss it!
Just in time to celebrate the coming of gay marriage to Virginia (yay!), those gay disco icons of the 70's, The Village People will be at The Beacon Theatre in Hopewell on Friday night. Doors open at 6, there will be an opener, tix range from $25 to $75. Here they are doing "Can't Stop the Music":
At The National on Friday night, Americana act The Devil Makes Three hits the stage. Their latest album, "I'm a Stranger Here" was produced by Americana legend, Buddy Miller. The Cave Singers will open the show at 8, doors open at 7, tix are $16 in advance, $19 at the door. Here's Devil Makes Three making music:
The Broadberry hosts Skydog, your excellent local Allman Brothers tribute band on Friday. Show starts at 8 with Josh Small opening. It's $8 in advance, $10 at the door. Here they are doing "Midnight Rider":
There's rival horny funk shows going on Friday. Mekong Express & The Get Fresh Horns will be at Tobacco Company starting at 9:30 and that's free to get in. They've been recording some music in the studio recently so we will hopefully be able to get some of that funk in the near future.
At Balliceaux Friday, No BS! Brass Band does a gig that starts at 10:30 and that's $10 to get in. Here they are at the 2nd St. Festival last weekend doing some Led Zeppelin. Give Bill a second when the video starts until he can get things straightened out.
You can also catch No BS at Strange Matter on Tuesday, 10/14 with Landlady. Doors open at 9, tix are $10 in advance, $12 at the door.
DJ Williams Projekt is at Broadberry on Tuesday, 10/14. You can enjoy yoga to the music of DJ Williams early with Groovinyasa out on the patio. That will start at 6. Tix are $10. If you go for the yoga, you get admission to the DJ Williams Projekt show later at 8 PM. Here's the Projekt jamming with Karl Denson at The Broadberry in August:
Have a great weekend! I'll see you at Earth, Wind & Fire, the Folk Fest and maybe Jeff The Brotherhood.

Weekend Picks: Earth, Wind & Fire, Ian Anderson, Hogtober, Oystoberfest, Touch a Truck, 2nd Street Festival, Southern Belles (x3), Trongone Band
If you're a child of the 80's or just wish you were, check out The Legwarmers - The Ultimate 80's Experience at The National on Friday night. Doors open at 7, show starts at 8 and it's $16 to get in. Here's a little sampler of their show. Bust out your skinny tie.
Jam band The Southern Belles will be at The Camel Friday. Fletcher's Grove from Morgantown WV will open the show. Southern Belles recently toured Colorado, WV, KY, KS, St. Louis, & Cincinnati so they are so happy to be back they are playing the Camel Friday, two shows in RVA Saturday (more on those in a second) and a show in DC Saturday night. Doors will open at 8, it's $7 to get in. Here's the Belles in Carbondale CO a couple weeks ago doing a couple originals:
Not a music event, but a lot of fun if you have kids that like big trucks, Touch a Truck will be at the Richmond International Raceway on Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM. Tix are $5 per person and the money goes to the Junior League of Richmond, There will be lots of construction vehicles, tractor trailers, emergency responder vehicles and even an Army helicoper for the kids to climb in and on and blow the horns.
In Jackson Ward, the 2nd Street Festival goes down on Saturday from 11:30 AM to 7 PM and on Sunday from noon to 6 PM. Lots of music, kids activities, food, beverages and fun. You can click the link there to see the full music lineup but the headliner is 80's funk band Midnight Star on Saturday at 5:45. I couldn't decide between "Freak-a-zoid" and "No Parking on the Dance Floor" so let's do them both.
Up on Libby Hill Park Saturday, it's Hogtober or the festival formerly known as High on the Hog. This will run from noon to 7 with lots of BBQ and other food and beer, though it is family friendly. This is one of the events Southern Belles, the hardest working band in Richmond, will play on Saturday. It's FREE to get in. Here's the full band lineup:
Another fall Richmond festival and another appearance by the Southern Belles (when do they sleep?) at Oystoberfest at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church in Ginter Park. That goes from noon to 6 PM and features oysters, brats, beer, bands, and a kids zone, where you can leave your kids while you enjoy the oysters, brats, beers and bands (OK, maybe you shouldn't leave them there). It's FREE to get in (though they do suggest a $2 donation). Here's the band lineup:
The Trongone Band brings their jammy covers and originals to Ashland Coffee & Tea Saturday night. I caught them at the Italian Fest last weekend and they put on a great show as always, with a standout version of the Grateful Dead's "New Speedway Boogie". The show gets underway at 8, it's $5 in advance, $10 day of show. Here's the band doing the Ween song (also covered by Phish) "Roses Are Free":
Sunday, classic rocker Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull comes to The National to do a Best of Jethro Tull show. All proceeds from the show are going to support veteran, first responders and to raise awareness of the global threat from Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). There are a number of special events and offers going on surrounding the show to support The Global Campaign against IEDs. Click the link HERE to check them out. And check out this classic Tull from 1977:
Wednesday night at Innsbrook it's Earth, Wind & Fire. Gates open 5, show starts at 6. I do not see an opening band listed, but if there is one, don't hold it against me. The Gold Circle (meh!) seats are all sold out for this one so it's GA for you. Tix are $20 in advance, $25 day of show. EWF has a new Christmas album out called "Holiday"with Christmas classics and a couple original songs. But since it's October, let's hope they stick to the hits Wednesday night. No need for Winter Wonderland (will they do that like "Boogie Wonderland"?) in October.
That's it. See you somewhere this weekend!
