Late Night Pick: No Doubt
No Doubt is back with their first album in 11 years, "Push and Shove", coming out in September and they'll be on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon tonight at 12:35 AM on NBC. Also on the show will be Fred Willard, who will, no doubt, have some explainin' to do. As if that wasn't enough, the Cos, Bill Cosby will be on too.

The weekend starts Thursday night, as all good weekends do, with folk rockers Indigo Girls at Maymont. Gates open at 5:30, music begins around 6:30 with openers The Shadowboxers. General Admission lawn tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the gate and kids 10 and under get in free. General Reserve Seating tix are $45 in advance. "Jim Lauderdale is a multi-talented performer and songwriter, with successes in both country and bluegrass music. His roots stem from the Carolinas, yet his career has taken him all over the United States and abroad, making him an international recording artist with an ever-growing fan base. Jim won “Artist of the Year” and “Song of the Year” at the first “Honors and Awards Show” held by the Americana Music Association in 2002. Subsequently, he has hosted this same show for the last seven years. On the interwebs all weekend, you can check out one of the biggest EDM (that's electronic dance music) festivals in all the world on YouTube HERE. I believe that things will get underway each day at 1 PM our time if I did my math right. The times on the site are in Central European Summer Time. So get your glow sticks out and shut the curtains. Here's a little promo video which is pretty funny. This could be your backyard!
Black Girls better not party too much on Friday night because they'll have to get up early-ish on Saturday to play a FREE show at Hardywood Brewery on Saturday from 4 to 8. There will be two sets of Black Girls and some DJ spinning in between.
A real good show on Saturday evening out at Innsbrook. Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers will be out there. Tix for General Admission are $16.50 in advance, $20 at the gate and kids 10 and under are free in GA. Tix for Gold Circle are $35 and kids 2 and under are free in the Gold Circle. Get there early because the opener is bluegrass band Leftover Salmon. Gates are gonna open at 5 PM and Leftover Salmon will start around 6:30. I would expect some cross-pollination going on between the two bands. Bruce recently scored and recorded the soundtrack to Spike Lee's new movie, "Red Hook Summer" so you may some selections from that. Perhaps Darius can change his name to Carius for the show. Gates open at 2, Cody comes on at 4, Corey at 5, Colt at 6:30, and Carius, er, Darius at 8. General Admission is $25 in advance, $30 at the gate. Gold Circle can be bought in advance only and are $50 a piece.
On Wednesday night at Maymont, folk/bluegrass/Americana band Old Crow Medicine Show will perform with The Lumineers and The Milk Carton Kids opening. Gates will open at 5:30, music starts around 6:30. Tix are $34 in advance, $39 at the gate, kids 10 and under are free. Old Crow is getting a sizable audience. They sold out the next two nights after Maymont at the 9:30 Club in DC and also sold out their show in Central Park in NYC. Old Crow just released their new album, "Carry Me Back" a little over a week ago so I'm sure you'll hear several selections from that. I bet they'll play this one. This is "Carry Me Back to Virginia" performed on the balcony of the Ryman Auditorium:

Also, Wednesday night, surf music pioneer and god, Dick Dale, will be at Capital Ale House downtown. Advance tix are $25, day of show tix are $30. Show starts at 8. From the look of Dick's website, he hasn't updated it since 1997 but he doesn't care because he's Dick Fu**in' Dale! Here's Dick Dale and the Del-Tones in 1966 doing "The Watusi". This video is freaking awesome even with the numbers in the middle of the screen thanks to the hip announcer and the dancers and this is from the "Hollywood A Go-Go" TV show:

Late Night Pick: Rufus Wainwright
Neo-crooner/singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright will be on Late Show with Dave Letterman tonight on CBS at 11:35 PM. Will Ferrell will also be on so surely hilarity will ensue. Rufus' latest album, "Out of the Game", has been chosen by both Rolling Stone and Paste Magazine as one of the best albums of the year so far.

Late Night Pick: A$AP Rocky
Tonight on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, catch acclaimed New York rapper, A$AP Rocky. Late Night is on at 12:35 AM on NBC. And Friday will also mean it's when Jimmy does his Thank You notes.

This is an incredibly busy week for music. Don't know if it's due to some bands crisscrossing Richmond on their way to Gathering of the Vibes festival in CT, AllGood Fest in WV and/or Firefly Fest in Dover DE, or just dumb luck.
The Avett Brothers bring their Americana music to Innsbrook on Friday night. General Admission tix in advance are $30 and $35 at the gate. Gates open at 6 and the show opens with Jessica Lee Mayfield. The Avett Brothers have a new album, "The Carpenter" coming out on September 11 so you might hear some new songs from that. The Killers will be at The National on Friday night but that show has been sold out for a long time now. If you want to head down anyway, doors open at 8, show starts at 9 and there is no opener listed, so get in on time. Since it's so hot, I thought you might want to think of Christmas, so here are The Killers doing "Cowboy Christmas Ball":
Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jackson Browne comes to the Carpenter Theatre on Friday night. Tickets run from $70 to $76. Show starts at 8 with opener Sara Watkins, who played at Friday Cheers earlier this year and was quite good. The good news is that's because they'll be working on a new full length album.

How you feeelin'! Michael Franti & Spearhead will be in town Wednesday night at The National to ask you that many times (trust me). Their show is always an upbeat, love fest and I mean that in the best way. You'll leave feeling happy and tired from bouncing and dancing. Tix are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Doors open at 7, show starts at 8 with Nic Cowan opening. This is one of my favorite Michael Franti songs, "Never Too Late". I put this one on one of the mixes I make with and for my kids.
Danish punk group Iceage will be at Strange Matter on Wednesday night. Tix are $10. Show starts at 9 with Zaloa, Unholy Thoughts, Lost Tribe and Double Negative.

People's Blues of Richmond, No BS! Brass Band, Late Night Pick: Graffiti6
Tonight at The Camel, Matty Volkes, the bassist for People's Blues of Richmond, celebrates his birthday by playing with his band. James Brown tribute band, The Big Payback, will open the show. Show starts at 10 and it's $5 to get in.
Over at Balliceaux, No BS! Brass Band will get funky in their own way. There is no cover charge and the show starts at 10:30.

Influential Swedish hardcore punk band Refused will be on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon tonight on NBC at 12:35 AM. Refused broke up in 1998 but got back together this year to do a bunch of shows.

Late Night Pick: The Melvins, RIP Bob Babbitt
Tonight check out a repeat of the Last Call with Carson Daly with seminal post-punk band, The Melvins. Last Call is on at 1:35 AM on NBC.
Funk Brother bassist Bob Babbitt died at 74 yesterday. The Funk Brothers played on most of Motown's output in the 60's and early 70's. Bob played on hits like "Tears of a Clown" "Signed Sealed Delivered", "Ball of Confusion" and countless others. The full obit is HERE. The Funk Brothers are some of the great unsung heroes of rock and roll and they finally got their due in the wonderful movie, "Standing in the Shadows of Motown". If you haven't seen it, see it right now.
