Had a great time at the Dukes of September concert on Sunday night. Dukes of September of course being Donald Fagan of Steely Dan, Michael McDonald & Boz Scaggs. This show was heavy on the covers including a nice version of the Grateful Dead's "Shakedown Street" and a mini-set of songs by The Band with each singer taking a song. And kudos to them for not choosing the obvious. I really don't need to hear "The Weight" again. Fagan did "King Harvest Has Surely Come", Boz did "Rag Mama Rag" and McDonald did "The Shape I'm In" with Boz faring the best, I think. The backup singers, Carolyn Escoffery and Catherine Russel, were also prominent all night including taking front stage for a couple songs. One did Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady" and the other did Muddy Waters' "I Love The Life I Live", and this allowed the prime players to just sit back and groove. Other highlights included Boz doing Teddy Pendergrass' "Love TK" in which he really nailed the soulful vocals, Donald Fagan's "I.G.Y." from his "The Nightfly" album, and Michael McDonald doing Ray Charles' "I Got News For You".
I was reading some of the commetns on the Richmond Times-Dispatch review and some people seemed upset that they didn't play more or all of their original songs but that wasn't really what this was meant to be and I enjoyed seeing a great band, including guitarist Jon Herington who shone all night, and a crack horn section play some of their favorite songs. I do think that they should have loaded some of their originals toward the end of the show. Of the encores, ("Help Me Rhonda" by the Beach Boys, "Something In the Air" by Thunderclap Newman, and "Them Changes" by Buddy Miles) only "Something in the Air" really took off with Fagan, Boz & McDonald each taking a verse.
I was also reminded of what a lame venue Innsbrook can be when it is packed. We got there at 5:30 to get a good spot and by the time they opened the gates, the line was literally about 200 yards long. Innsbrook has no slope whatsoever making it hard to see if you are in the back. As predicted, this was a sit down crowd in fact virulently so, with one of the biggest cheers of the night in the area I was in coming when security told some dudes in the Gold Circle to sit down. We also had a couple who tried to stand in front of us. Look, I know you paid the same amount as we did but when 99% of the crowd has brought chairs, just move to the edge or to the area near the very front where people are standing. As someone said, "Just because you have the right to do something, doesn't make it right". They did move shortly before the show started after a member of my party informed the standing gentlemen that he had a brown stain on the back of his white shorts from a wet fart. And that was not a lie. He really did.
Just a suggestion here. How about taking the land that the Classic Amphitheater is on, tearing down the old shed and building a new shed or even just a stage like the one at Innsbrook? You can take out the seats too and have a set up like Charlottesville Pavilion with an open area in the front that you can leave open or add seats to depending on the show. But at least you'd have the natural slope to enable better sight lines. Or if we must keep Innsbrook, then they should buy some dirt over the fall/winter and add a little bit of slope at Innsbrook. I do appreciate that you keep the prices down (tix for the Dukes at Innsbrook were $30 for GA, $50 for gold circle. Tix for the Dukes at The Chicago Theater start at $58 and top seats are $153!) but I've gotta think twice next time about going to a show there with a large Gold Circle (or any Gold Circle for that matter) that I know will be heavily attended.
Now, if you would like to see some Yacht Rock in a more comfortable venue, check out some of the guys I met at the Dukes show from a band called 3 Sheets to The Wind. I started a conversation with them when I saw them dressed in their finest Yacht Rock attire including aviator shades and captain hats. The band will be at The Republic on Thursday night. The show starts at 10 and is FREE. They are promising "Nautical Costume Contest (free tshirt prize), New Songs, Hall & Oates 3-way, Premier of "3 Sheets TV", New Stage Antics, Same old smoothness!". Also this weekend, if you are hangin' out and having that final summer bar-b-q, tune into the Moedown XI fest on iclips.net. As usual, iClips has nothing on their site about the webcast yet but they did say it was coming on their Facebook page. The actual festival runs from 5 PM Friday - 1 AM, noon Saturday - 2 AM, and noon Sunday - midnight. So tune into iClips around 5 on Friday and see what's what. Bands at the festival (though all may not be shown on the webcast) include Tortoise (playing in Richmond next week), moe. (duh. Its their fest so they'll do 6 sets over the weekend.), Lotus, Built to Spill, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, Mike Gordon (from Phish), and Black Keys among others.
One of the top band of the 80s will be in town on Sunday night. Tears For Fears will be at The National. Doors open at 7 and show starts at 8 with opener Wainwright. Tix are $42.50 in advance and $47.50 at the door. A great pop band and I don't think they toured much in their more popular days let alone now. They of course had the hits "Everybody Wants To Rule The World", "Shout", "Head Over Heels", "Woman In Chains" and my favorite TFF song, "Sowing the Seeds of Love":
Cee-Lo Green of Gnarls Barkley fame has done it again. Just like "Crazy", he has made an insanely catchy song that once you hear it, you will want to hear again and again and it will be playing in your head for days, maybe weeks. But don't sing it around your grandma or your kids. After all, the title is "F**k You". Never did those words sound so happy. And it has an awesome video too. Language obviously NSFW. Dukes of September, The Bridge, Coheed & Cambria, Michael Franti & Spearhead
Friday night at the Canal Club, funky Americana jam band The Bridge will perform with opener Caught In The Rift. Doors open at 8 and tix are $13 advance, $15 at the door. Here they are at DelFest in Columbia MD earlier this summer:
There are a number of shows on Sunday starting with a benefit for the Make a Wish Foundation at the Canal Club. The show will feature Against Grace, Love and Reverie, Roslyn, Burn the Ballroom, District Kids, Safety Word Orange, From Coast to Skyline & Battleghost. Doors open at 4 PM and the show should be done by 10 PM. Tix are $10 in advance and $12 at the door.

Michael Franti & Spearhead's new album "The Sound of Sunshine" comes out on September 21 so I'm sure you'll be hearing some stuff from that. Here he is doing his current hit from that album, the title track, "The Sound of Sunshine". This is from this year's Bonnaroo.
On Sunday, I'll be attending the Dukes of September Rhythm Revue show at Innsbrook. The Dukes are Donald Fagen from Steely Dan, Michael McDonald and Boz Scaggs. General Admission Advance tix are $26.50. Gold Circle Seating tickets are no longer available. Gates open at 6pm, music begins at 7pm and there is no opener. This will be similar to the NY Rock & Soul Revue which featured these guys among others back in the early 90s. I attended one of their shows in NJ and it was a great show, with each band member taking a turn doing their own songs and cover tunes. If you scroll down a bit on the blog here, you'll see a link to an interview with Donald Fagen talking about these shows that I posted earlier in the week. This show promises to be totally freakin' smooth, so much so, that I may actually bring a chair to this one, even though I hate to sit down at concerts, because I will be blown away by smoothness. Also, I expect the audience to be made up of many tight-assed older people who forgot how to dance at a rock n' roll show. But we'll see and I'm sure that won't distract from the music.
To steal a line from the Wayward Blog, this is the Monsters of Yacht tour, as in Yacht Rock, which gives me a chance to post another episode of the Yacht Rock series. This is Yacht Rock Episode #8 which details the origin of Yacht Rock and how a young Michael McDonald would not let anyone break the Fortress of Smoothitude. Language in this is definitely Not Safe For Work.
Finally, progressive metal band Coheed & Cambria come to The National on Monday night. Tix are $25 in advance, $27.50 day of show. Ticketmaster: A Step In the Right Direction
Ticketmaster took a step in the right direction today to be more fan friendly. They will now reveal service charges up front rather than waiting until the point where you enter your credit card info. That will help you determine the true price of the ticket before you buy and then can decide if you still want the ticket.
They also will have a three-day return policy which cuts off a week before the show. That is you have three days after you buy the tickets to return the tickets. Would like to see them just extend this as an open return policy until a week before the show but I understand that they can't do this because of the ticket brokers. They can't have a ticket broker buying 100 tickets, waiting until a week before the show and then dumping them back into the system via return. If we can't get rid of the ticket brokers at least we have to make them take the risk that they'll lose money if they have to eat tickets or sell them for a price lower than face.
This is all lined out in Ticketmaster's new blog, Ticketology. Should be interesting to see how this blog develops over coming months.

Wiggles, Toubab Krewe, Build a Well for Sudan, Guitar Shorty, Kenny Neal
I'll be hitting up what is definitely the show of the summer tomorrow......if you are in pre-school. That's right, I'm off to the The Wiggles Wiggly Circus at the Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage on Thursday night. Anthony, Greg, Jeff and the new yellow shirt guy will be entertaining in their Wiggly way. All I know is that if they bust out a Big Red Car > Frere Jacues > Twinkle Twinkle Little Star > Sugar Magnolia > Big Red Car reprise, my almost three-year-old Willie will lose his mind. I just hope he doesn't mix too much E and Faygo like he did at the Gathering of the Juggalos last weekend when he went bananas and starting throwing rocks at Tila Tequila. He didn't come down until three in the morning. OK, that's a lie. The Wiggles don't play Sugar Magnolia. But they do play Split Enz's "Six Months in a Leaky Boat":
For more adult fare, check out Toubab Krewe on Saturday night at Capital Ale House downtown. They played at Friday Cheers in 2009 and were the best band of the run that year. They play great groovy West African inspired music. They have been signed by the new Nat Geo (as in National Geographic) Music label and their new album on that label comes out on 9/7. You would think, "West African inspired music, Nat Geo label" they must be black musicians from Mali or something. Wrong. They're a bunch of white guys from Asheville NC who have blended rock music with traditional African music to create a heady mix. The show starts at 10 PM on Saturday and tix are $13 in advance and $15 at the door. Here they are at Bonnaroo in 2009 doing their song "Sirens":
Sunday, you can actually help Africa when Capital Ale House downtown hosts a benefit for United Families for Sudan with the proceeds going to help build a well for a Sudanese village. The show will run from 3 to 9 PM and feature music from The Big Guys, Kurt R Sternahagen, Elana Hyner Jazz Trio, Maharal, Moosa and Rattlemouth. Tix are $10 at the door.
Next Wednesday night, August 25, bluesmen Guitar Shorty and Kenny Neal will play a show at the Capital Ale House Downtown which is sponsored by the River City Blues Society. The show will start at 7 PM and tix are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Guitar Shorty hails from Texas and influenced Hendrix and Buddy Guy. He won the Blues Music Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album Of The Year for his album "We The People" just four years ago so you know he can still bring it. Kenny Neal comes out of Louisiana and won a 2009 Blues Award for Song of the Year ("Let Life Flow") and won the 2008 Blues Critic Readers Poll awards for Album of the Year and Contemporary Blues Artist of the Year.

Prarie Home Companion, Richmond Jazz Festival, Al Gore rocks out
This weekend begins with Garrison Keillor bringing the Prarie Home Companion gang, including my favorite, Guy Noir, to Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens for a show. The show will start at 7 PM, doors open at 5:30 and tix are $55.
Saturday & Sunday at Maymont is the first Richmond Jazz Festival. Tickets are $50 for the whole weekend, or $30 for a single day pass. The show will run noon to 10 on Saturday and noon to 9 on Sunday. If you intend to go, note that you can't park at Maymont. You have to take a shuttle from satellite parking. They've also got a new album "Red Velvet Car" coming out on 8/31 so expect to hear a few cuts from that along with all the hits. I'm just gonna go with it and post some classic Heart. Saturday, Corrine Bailey Rae will be playing "Fridays" at Sunset in a show rescheduled from June 18th. Doors open at 6 and tix are $30. This one will take place on Kanawha Plaza. No opener is listed. They also said you can go to lollapalooza.com to find the webcast. Strangely, neither iclips.net or the Lollapalooza site have any word about the webcast. Arcade Fire webcast tonight in new YouTube concert series
I'll hit up the weekend's activities later tonight, but I wanted to let you all know about the Arcade Fire webcast tonight starting at 10 PM ET. Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/user/ArcadeFireVEVO.
This is part of YouTube's new Upstaged series where they'll be streaming live concerts. These sound pretty cool because the concerts will offer some unique features. Here is what the YouTube blog says: "Each performance will not only be streamed live on YouTube, but it will also have unique on- and offline components to entertain fans -- for example, you may be able to vote on the encore performance or switch camera angles. And if you miss anything, no worries: the full show and highlights will be available on the artist’s channel soon after the show."
They've already got John Legend & The Roots lined up for future concets.
