Torche, Marco Benevento, 3 Sheets to the Wind, Late Night Pick: Donald Fagen

Tonight (Thursday) at The Camel, stoner/sludge metal band Torche will head a lineup of three bands including Gritter and Brief Lives. Doors open at 8, show starts at 9. It's $10 to get in. Here's Torche's "Across the Shields":

Over at Capital Ale House tonight, it's jam band veteran keyboardist, Marco Benevento. Tix are $14, show starts at 9 PM with opener, WOLF!  Here's part of(?) Marco's set from 9/27/12 in Louisville:

If you are in more of a yacht rock kind of mood, check out Three Sheets to the Wind at Republic tonight. Show will start around 9:30 and it's FREE. The theme is "Back to the Future" so they may play this one tonight:

Speaking of yacht rock, tonight's Late Night Pick is Steely Dan's Donald Fagen on Late Show with David Letterman on CBS at 11:35 PM. Donald will probably do a song from his new album, "Sunken Condos". To celebrate here is the episode of "Yacht Rock" featuring Steely Dan and their epic feud with The Eagles. BTW, this video is NSFW due to some nasty language. Hey, it was a nasty feud.

Dukes of September, The Bridge, Coheed & Cambria, Michael Franti & Spearhead

Friday night at the Canal Club, funky Americana jam band The Bridge will perform with opener Caught In The Rift.  Doors open at 8 and tix are $13 advance, $15 at the door.  Here they are at DelFest in Columbia MD earlier this summer:

There are a number of shows on Sunday starting with a benefit for the Make a Wish Foundation at the Canal Club.  The show will feature Against Grace, Love and Reverie, Roslyn, Burn the Ballroom, District Kids, Safety Word Orange, From Coast to Skyline & Battleghost.  Doors open at 4 PM and the show should be done by 10 PM.  Tix are $10 in advance and $12 at the door.
Here's Against Grace performing "I Can Feel It" at the Capital Ale House last month:

Michael Franti & Spearhead bring their upbeat rebel reggae rock to The National on Sunday night.  Tix are $23.50 in advance and $26 at the door.  Doors open at 7 and the show starts at 8 with DJ Fuklor opening.  Michael Franti & Spearhead's new album "The Sound of Sunshine" comes out on September 21 so I'm sure you'll be hearing some stuff from that.  Here he is doing his current hit from that album, the title track, "The Sound of Sunshine".  This is from this year's Bonnaroo.

On Sunday, I'll be attending the Dukes of September Rhythm Revue show at Innsbrook.  The Dukes are Donald Fagen from Steely Dan, Michael McDonald and Boz Scaggs.  General Admission Advance tix are $26.50.  Gold Circle Seating tickets are no longer available.  Gates open at 6pm, music begins at 7pm and there is no opener.  This will be similar to the NY Rock & Soul Revue which featured these guys among others back in the early 90s.  I attended one of their shows in NJ and it was a great show, with each band member taking a turn doing their own songs and cover tunes.  If you scroll down a bit on the blog here, you'll see a link to an interview with Donald Fagen talking about these shows that I posted earlier in the week.  This show promises to be totally freakin' smooth, so much so, that I may actually bring a chair to this one, even though I hate to sit down at concerts, because I will be blown away by smoothness.  Also, I expect the audience to be made up of many tight-assed older people who forgot how to dance at a rock n' roll show.  But we'll see and I'm sure that won't distract from the music.

To steal a line from the Wayward Blog, this is the Monsters of Yacht tour, as in Yacht Rock, which gives me a chance to post another episode of the Yacht Rock series.  This is Yacht Rock Episode #8 which details the origin of Yacht Rock and how a young Michael McDonald would not let anyone break the Fortress of Smoothitude.  Language in this is definitely Not Safe For Work.

Finally, progressive metal band Coheed & Cambria come to The National on Monday night.  Tix are $25 in advance, $27.50 day of show.  Doors open at 6 and show starts at 7 with openers The Dear Hunter and Circa Survive.  Here they are on "Here We Are Juggernaut" rockin' the f**k out during the Apocalypse:

That's it. I'm tired. Have a great weekend. See you at Monsters of Yacht....er....Dukes of September on Sunday night.

Kenny Loggins, Dinosaur Jr, Mike Watt, Manchester Orchestra

Kenny Loggins will be at Innsbrook on Wednesday night. Tix are $20 in advance, $25 at the door, and $40 Gold Circle. Kenny was the king of the 80s soundtracks. "I'm Alright". "Danger Zone". "Footloose". But what I'm really excited about with Kenny coming is that I once again get to show a little "Yacht Rock". One of the funniest Internet series ever, "Yacht Rock" centers around the smooth rock of the late 70s - early 80s as epitomized by Michael McDonald and The Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, Hall & Oates, Christopher Cross, and, of course, Kenny Loggins. You also may have seen some of the Yacht Rock actors on the VH1 special, In the second episode of Yacht Rock, Loggins & McDonald engage in a songwriting contest with Hall & Oates, Christopher Cross makes his debut, and one of Kenny's biggest hits is written. The language in this is not safe for work so be forewarned.

Strangely, Christopher Cross' song, "Sailing", made an appearance in a dream I had last night. I don't know what that means. Maybe it was my subconscious telling me to keep it smooth.

On Thursday night, 4/30, alt-rock kings Dinosaur Jr. and Mike Watt and the Missingmen come to the National. Doors open at 7, show starts at 8 and tix are $23.

On Friday night, 4/24, Manchester Orchestra plays at the National. There are 3 opening bands. Show starts at 7:30 with doors opening at 6:30. Tix are $14.

I would have linked to some videos and stuff but my Internet connection is not working well tonight for some reason. Sooooo just go watch another episode of Yacht Rock and enjoy your weekend.
