Weekend Picks: PVRIS, Aesop Rock, BRONCHO, Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors, KINGS, Fear of Music, Love on Tap: Benefit for VA Pride

The weekend starts Thursday night at Gallery5 with the RVA funk of KINGS, the psychedelic West African funk by way of Brooklyn of Super Yamba Band and the "Minimalist Appalachian Math Rock Live Looping Sound Explosion" of Dave Watkins. Doors open at 7, show starts at 8, tix are $5 advance, $7 at the door. Here's Super Yamba Band playing in Harlem in December:



Americana folk rock band Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors close out the season at Friday Cheers. It's $10 to get in. Be sure to get in early to see Major and the Monbacks at 6:30. Here's a chunk of the press blurb on DH&TN:

Fear of Music: Talking Heads Tribute Band get all new wave on your ass at The Broadberry Friday night. This will be Fear of Music's last RVA show until September. Tix are $12 advance, $15 day of show, doors open at 8, show starts at 9 with The Slank opening. Here's the Talking Heads' "Burning Down the House". The long fade-out at the end of the song always reminds me of watching MTV late at night when I was in high school. And what's weird is that Fear of Music look exactly like the "cover band" in this video.

At Hardywood on Sunday afternoon, celebrate the anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling on marriage equality with Love on Tap: A Benefit for Virginia Pride. The tasting room opens at noon, music starts at 2. There will be gourmet food vendors, a photo booth, and music from Trunk Show Band, presenting a Mix Tape of greatest hits from They Might Be Giants, Green Day, The Killers, Amy Winehouse, Fleetwood Mac, Heart, Paul Simon and David Bowie, Then, indie pop duo My Darling Fury plays. Finally, the disco punk of Toxic Moxie closes things out.

Strange Matter features BRONCHO on Sunday night. Winter and Big No open. Doors open at 9. $10 to get in. BRONCHO play indie garage punk alternative noise pop rock. Their new album, "Double Vanity" just came out. Here's Broncho's psychedelic track from that album, "Senora Borealis":



Alternative rapper Aesop Rock is at The National Monday. Tix are $18 in advance, $20 day of show. Homeboy Sandman opens the show at 8, doors open at 7. Press blurb please:

Weekend Picks: Justin Townes Earle, Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors, The Congress, Trongone Band, Richmond Bluegrass Jam, Hardywood Carnaval

It was even cold in New Orleans for real Mardi Gras, but perhaps things will warm up and at least you'll be indoors for Hardywood's Carnaval on Friday night. This will be Mardi Gras Brazilian style, thus the Carnaval title. It's FREE to get in and all ages are welcome. Things get underway at 5:30 with Capoeira Resistencia Brazilian martial art dance. Then, hometown heroes Bio Ritmo bring the salsa and Dende (from NYC) will close things out with Afro-Brazilian funk. Here's a preview video of Dende:

Trongone Band bring the jam/classic rock, both covers and originals, to The Camel Friday night. It's $7 to get in, doors open at 9 and the show starts with openers Dead 27s from Charleston SC. Here's Trongone Band at The Camel last month with "Ain't It Funny":



Saturday, the 6th Annual Richmond Bluegrass Jam lands at the Cultural Arts Center in Glen Allen. It will run from noon until midnight with 30 bands playing on 3 stages. You'll be able to eat at local food trucks and get beer but this is a family friendly event with activities for the kids. There is no charge at the door, but donations are suggested and encouraged as the money raised goes to the Richmond Fisher House, a home for military families to stay while their veterans and soldiers are in the VA medical center. Americana rock band, The Congress, who are much, much better than the US Congress, will perform at The Camel Saturday night. Tix are $12 in advance, $15 at the door, doors open at 8, show starts at 9 with Butcher Brown. The Congress will be supporting Tedeschi Trucks Band at the inaugural show at Blue Ridge Bowl on the Lockn' Festival site on April 18. Here's the Congress with "Ain't It Easy":

Country rock band Everwilde will be at Tobacco Company Saturday night. That starts at 9:30 and it don't cost nothin' to get in. They play originals and covers and here they are covering The Grateful Dead's "Friend of the Devil" at The Tobacco Company a year ago. The video isn't much to look at but the sound is pretty good.



Americana rock artist Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors are at The Broadberry Sunday night. Angaleena Presley opens the show. Doors open at 7, show starts at 8, $13 in advance, $15 at the door. Drew's latest album, "Medicine", recently got into the top 30 on the Billboard charts. Here they go doing "Here We Go". Looks like they emptied out the costume store for this video.



Rootsy singer-songwriter Justin Townes Earle, son of Steve, will be at the Modlin Center for the Arts Camp Concert Hall Wednesday. The show starts at 7:30 with Gill Landry. Tix range from $10 to $28 depending on your demographic. After a brief bit of talking (36 seconds), here's Justin doing "Call Ya Momma":



Here's one from the guy who gave Justin his middle name and who was a mentor to Justin's dad, Steve. This is Townes Van Zandt doing his song "Pancho & Lefty", which was famously covered by Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson.
