Weekly Picks: Speedy Ortiz, Southern Belles, Former Champions, Big Payback

Looks like everyone is recovering from New Year's Eve, including the bands, as this looks like a slow weekend for everyone but The Camel.

Thursday night at The Camel, it's The Big Payback: A Tribute to James Brown. They're billing this show as the "Champagne Campaign" so if you aren't sick of champagne yet, you'll get a free glass with your admission of $7. The show starts at 8 with The Flavor Project opening. If you need some new dance steps for tonight, who better to teach you than the Godfather of Soul himself:

Friday at The Camel, jam rockers Southern Belles will perform as part of their usual First Friday residency. The Trongone Band will open. The bands will jam together on some Grateful Dead tunes, for sure. Doors open at 9 and it's $7 to get in. Here they are playing "I'm a Wreck" at Fontana's in NYC on 12/18:

On Saturday night at The Camel, jamtronica band Former Champions plays for you. Doors open at 9 and it's $7 to get in. Here they are doing "O.E." at The Camel a couple years ago:

Grungy Indie rockers Speedy Ortiz check into Strange Matter on Monday night. This is an early show with the doors opening at 5 and the show will be done by 9. It's $8 to get in. The show will start at 6 with openers Grass is Green, Sundials and Spit-Take. They were named on Denny's Year End Best of List. Yes, Denny's the restaurant. Oh, and also on year-end best of lists from Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, The Boston Globe, Paste Magazine, NME Magazine, Mother Jones, The A.V. Club, Allston Pudding, Clicky Clicky Music Blog, Consequence of Sound, Stereogum, Recommended Listen, Washington Post, and Myspace. Here they are performing "Gary":

Have a great weekend and Happy New Year!
